Deacon Doctor Basem Lamei Ashamallah, later known as Father Daoud Lamei, was born in Cairo on March 11, 1962. His parents were also involved in the church. Before ordination, he, along with his siblings, served at Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church in Heliopolis. He completed his Sunday School Preparatory studies in 1978 and began teaching Sunday School to children of various age groups. He also served as Deputy Superintendent of the Pre-Servants Preparation course and participated in Saint Stephen's Medical Church Group, founded by students at the Faculty of Medicine.
Father Daoud graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in 1985 and earned a Master's degree in Dermatology in 1990. He worked as a dermatologist for 13 years and served as a Reserve Officer in the army for two and a half years. He also ministered to refugees and began serving in slum areas around 1985.
Father Daoud married Tasoni Shereen and was later chosen to be ordained as a priest in the USA. However, he and his wife preferred to remain in Egypt. On June 8, 1998, he was ordained by Pope Shenouda III at Saint Pishoi's Monastery in Egypt. He was promoted to the rank of Hegumen on May 11, 2010, also by Pope Shenouda III. Father Daoud serves at Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church in Cleopatra, Heliopolis, Egypt, and is involved in various ministries. He has published numerous works, some translated into English and French, and has led voluntary missions to help those in need, particularly in Africa. He also presents programs on various Coptic TV channels.
His monastic journey began in 1927 when he left his job in Alexandria to become a monk at the Monastery of El-Baramous, adopting the name Mina. As Pope, he remained humble, often performing menial tasks himself, and made himself accessible to all, abolishing barriers between himself and his congregation. His many achievements include renovating Saint Mark's Cathedral, establishing the Monastery of Saint Mina, founding Coptic churches worldwide, and successfully returning the relics of Saint Mark from Italy to Egypt. His life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to God and his people.
